HDPE pipe butt fusion welding: what it is and where it is used

HDPE pipe on a butt fusion welding machine at a site

HDPE is polyethylene pipe used for underground infrastructure. In butt fusion welding the ends of two pipes are heated and pressed together, and they cool into one continuous joint.

Why this method is used

  • The joint is continuous and leak-free when made correctly
  • It works for all pipe diameters
  • The finished line can be pressure-tested

Where it is applied

For new underground installations and for repairs of existing pipelines, for example after a CCTV inspection has located a damaged section.

Pressure testing

After welding, the joints are pressure-tested to confirm they hold. This is part of how GCT delivers leak-free work.

Diagnostics and welding from one company

GCT finds the problem with CCTV and GPS and then welds the replacement section, so there is one team responsible for the whole job.
